Welcome to Topo Pino: A Journey Through Time and Family

At the heart of every cherished place is a story, and Topo Pino is no exception. Nestled on the Maine/New Hampshire border, this haven has been a treasured part of our family for over 55 years. In 1967, my grandfather, "Doc," a celebrated WWII veteran and Princeton graduate, discovered Topo Pino through a small ad in Yankee Magazine and made it our family's retreat.
The name Topo Pino, meaning "Place of Tall Pines," was bestowed upon the property by Janet McKenzie Hill, a prominent culinary reformist of the early 20th century. In the early 1900s, she hosted the Boston Cooking School's summer sessions here, following the school’s rise to fame after the publication of The Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Fannie Merritt Farmer.
In 2017, my mother, Lucy, and I decided to revitalize Topo Pino and start a family business. Our mission was simple: to inspire others to connect with the beauty of the natural world and to find joy in life’s simple pleasures. For six memorable summers, we hosted glamping guests under the canopy of tall pines, sharing with them the magic of this place we hold so dear. Through those seasons, Topo Pino became more than just a retreat—it became a gathering space for stories, laughter, and connection.
For us, Topo Pino represents a deep connection—with nature, with our family’s legacy, and with each other. It’s where we’ve laughed under starlit skies, shared stories by the fire, and rediscovered the joy of simple living. It’s also where we’ve faced challenges together, learning and growing as we brought our vision to life.
Through this blog, I’ll be sharing the stories, lessons, and inspirations that come from life at Topo Pino. From the smallest details that make it special to the bigger dreams we’re still chasing, this is our way of inviting you into our world.
Whether you’re seeking a connection to nature, ideas for meaningful living, or just a moment of calm, we hope Topo Pino can become a part of your journey too.
Welcome to our story—let’s begin.
